How Would Obama Handle Medical Marijuana in New York?

The Huffington Post is running headlines about how New York state lawmakers are discussing a push for medical marijuana.  In the article there are a few interesting thoughts concerning medical marijuana:

“Anyone who has watched a loved one struggle with a debilitating illness would do almost anything to help alleviate their pain,” Savino wrote in a letter to Governor Cuomo last summer after New Jersey Governor Chris Christie allowed a medical marijuana bill to move forward. “New Jersey showed real compassion for Garden State residents who are suffering from cancer, multiple sclerosis and other life-threatening diseases. We need to follow this example and pass legislation to allow doctors to prescribe medical marijuana when no other option is available.”

While the article makes some great points as to why New York ought to legalize marijuana, the Huffington Post fails to own up to the fact that their man Obama has a not-so-great track record when it comes to prescription pot.  Over at, you’ll find article after article demonstrating that Obama has been nothing but a buzzkill when it comes to pot-politics.  One can only wonder how he will handle legalization in New York

This should be bothersome to both liberal and conservatives.  For liberals, it should be irritating to see their “hip” and “progressive” president still allowing the DEA to raid those who are legally using medicine prescribed by their doctors.  For conservatives, the constitutional argument for states’ rights ought to be at the forefront of the medical marijuana debate.

For whatever reason though, both sides are split on the issue.  It just goes to show that we are far from coming to any real solutions with our drug problems.
