Former First Lady Michelle Obama wants affirmative action in every segment of American society– especially the Republican Party. Too many white, male politicians in the GOP, she contends, means minority Americans will never get a fair shake in the United States,
Obama delivered her racially divisive remarks at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women on Tuesday.
She said any organization looking to make sure its policies are fair to people from all backgrounds should begin by ensuring that internal problem solving teams are diverse.
Republican members of Congress, the former first lady added, are simply not a diverse enough group to come up with legislation that benefits minorities.
Obama went on to recount her experience looking out over members of Congress during the annual State of the Union address, saying: “At the State of the Union address…when you are in the room what you can see is this real dichotomy. It’s a feeling of color almost. On one side of the room is literally gray and white. Literally, that is the color palette on one side of the room. On the other side of the room, there are yellows and blues and whites and greens. Physically, there’s a difference in color, in the tone, because on one side all men, all white, on the other side some woman, some people of color.”
The former first lady added that she was embarrassed each time she attended the event due to the racial makeup of the Republican Party.
The result of all that GOP whiteness is the ruination of American politics for minorities, according to Obama.
“I look at that, and I go, ‘No wonder. No wonder we struggle, no wonder people don’t trust politics,” she said.
Obama said the only answer is for minorities to fight for positions of power currently held by white men and for white politicians and business leaders “to be willing to give up their seats to make room.”
