President Donald Trump used his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference Friday to warn conservative voters against getting too comfortable with the current Republican control in Washington.
To frequent applause from an excited crowd of CPAC attendees, the president began his speech by discussing some of the things his administration has accomplished in a little more than a year.
“We’ve come a long way together,” Trump told the crowd.
The president went on to say that his administration’s actions over the past year have proven his conservative values, despite doubts many Republicans had when he first announced his bid for the presidency.
“We’ve confirmed a record number … of circuit court judges, and we’re going to be putting in a lot more,” Trump said, adding that the administration also appointed conservative Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
Trump also mentioned his administration’s massive tax reform package.
“So we passed the biggest tax cuts in the history of our country. And it was called tax cut and reform. And I said to our people, don’t use the word reform because they are were going to go with the tax reform act, and I said no wonder for 45 years nothing’s been passed … Reform can mean they’re going to pay more tax,” Trump said. “So, I convinced politicians who have done this all their lives, and they do a great job in many cases … So we have the tax reform act, and that was it. And it is called the tax cuts act and add jobs. We had to add jobs into it because we have been picking up a tremendous number of jobs. 2.7 million jobs.”
The president added that he believes Democrat opposition to the tax package will hurt Democrats in the 2018 midterms. But, the president added, that’s no reason for Republican voters to get complacent.
“Right now, we have a big race coming up, you have to get out you have to just get that enthusiasm. Keep it going,” Trump said. “See, the word really is complacent. People get complacent. It is a natural instinct. You just won, and now, you’re happy and complacent. Don’t be complacent. Okay, don’t be complacent.
“If they get in, they will repeal your tax cuts. They will put judges in that you wouldn’t believe. They will take away your Second Amendment, which we will never allow to happen,” the president said to major applause.
