Free Speech Means Free Speech
December 7, 2011 |
Oh boy, the Westboro Baptist Church is back in the news again. This time they’re on the defense. A federal appeals court has agreed to take a second look at a St. Louis suburb’s law that was originally meant to stop the WBC’s protests. The law was originally ruled unconstitutional – as it should have been – but the newest challenge is bringing the Westboro Baptist Church one step closer to the United States Supreme Court.
The things that the Westboro crowd has to say are absolutely offensive, but that is exactly the type of speech the first amendment protects. You may not like what they have to say, or the way they say it, but they have same rights to say what they think as you and I do.
For those of you who simply can’t stand the thought of a group of trolls parading around a funeral with hate filled banners, there is a very libertarian solution to this issue: private property. Protests are protected on public property only. Moving funerals to private property would ensure that anyone attempting to protest could be arrested for tresspassing.
It may not be the most perfect solution, but it’s a lot better than surrendering our freedoms for a group of pseudo-religious jerks.
