High Blood Pressure Cures Racism, Study Stupidly Doesn’t Really Indicate, But Still

This is, perhaps, one of the most ridiculous and disturbing articles I’ve had the displeasure of reading in quite some time. And that’s damn well saying something.

Propranolol 40 mg-SID
Cures Racism! And Memory Formation! And Emotions, Too!

Blood pressure pill may ease racism: Study

A common prescription drug used to treat high blood pressure may also curb racist thoughts, a new U.K. study suggests.

University of Oxford researchers found people who took the drug propranolol showed less implicit racism — automatic, subconscious bias — than those who took a placebo.

Half of study participants were given the drug and the other half received a placebo. They were given prejudice tests before, during and after taking the pills. Participants were asked to quickly categorize positive and negative words with the faces of back and white people.

Right. Racism is apparently a medical disorder treatable with blood pressure medication. After you laugh at this, ponder for a few moments just where this might lead.

I took Propranolol for years. I stopped taking Propranolol because I began to quickly lose memory function after three or so years taking the medication. It does not “erase” memories, as some television shows have suggested. Propranolol does, however, directly effect areas of the brain that cause memory to connect fully with emotion. It does so by blocking adrenaline flow to the amygdala. This effectively and significantly limits the brain’s capacity to connect a short term memory with an emotional response, therefore severely weakening the formation of a specific memory.

The people administered Propranolol were given “prejudice” tests before, during and after taking the medication. The reason they showed fewer “racism” indicators?

It’s likely that the reason is the fact that Propranolol is effectively PREVENTING them from being able to show “prejudice” indicators. Why? Because the medication simply blocked any sort of emotional response to these “tests” at all, and their short term memories were thus limited to nothing but emotionless data received.

Think about this. Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that Propranolol DOES, in fact, “cure” racism. Fine. But it does so by quite literally limiting your own emotional responses to stimuli and as well it is more than likely going to significantly effect your own memory formation—whether you want that to happen or not.

I sincerely hope people are paying attention. Orwell and Huxley were right.
