Rand Paul for VP? Let’s Hope Not
June 1, 2012 |
I read some news just the other day about how Mitt Romney apparently held a half-hour long meeting with Senator Rand Paul recently. As expected, this meeting perpetuated rumors among the libertarian blogosphere that Romney is leaning towards Paul as a potential running-mate. However accurate or inaccurate those assumptions may be, I have to wonder if picking someone like Paul will actually have any effect among voters.
Rand Paul is one of the few, truly small-government Republicans in congress right now. One has to wonder if pulling him out of a position where he has the ability to actually affect legislation, and putting him in to a position where his policies will have little influence, is a smart move or not. A Romney-Paul ticket might sound like a fair compromise for some right-libertarians, but it would appear that having Rand Paul in the senate is a much better situation – with or without Romney as president.
Hopefully, if this meeting was about a possible VP pick, Rand Paul will have the forethought to respectfully decline the offer. I’m sure it wouldn’t be easy, but it would be the best scenario for everyone.
